Understand the difference between Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal printing?
1. The label material has a topcoat depending on the technology of the printer.
2. Both thermal transfer and direct thermal use heat from the printhead to print the image.
3. Thermal Transfer printing requires a ribbon.
4. Direct Thermal does not use a ribbon. Must have direct thermal topcoated material.
5. Printers that print Thermal Transfer typically have the option to print Direct Thermal.
6. Direct thermal printing is often found in an environment were the label is used for short term like a shipping labels, address labels, file folders, jewelry or pricing labels or other similar situations and not used where heat or the sun is directly on the label.
7. Thermal Transfer is typically found in more permanent printing environments and uses a varitey of wax and resin ribbons to print the information.
8. The recommended cleaning and maintenance of the printhead is often overlooked and can have an impact on the quality of the print in either environment.
